Yorkshire Sound Women Network launches initiative for female-identifying electronic music composers

YSWN will select six female-identifying electronic music composers that are up-and-coming or early on in their careers

Yorkshire Sound Women Network has introduced a new initiative – Sound Pioneers – that will select six female-identifying electronic music composers that are up-and-coming or early on in their careers in pro sound and whose work has not yet been widely performed in a professional context.

YSWN is working in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and the University of Hull, where the chosen composers will be able to partake in creative five-day residencies using the universities’ music studio facilities. Sound Pioneers is also supported by the PRS Foundation’s Open Fund for Organisations and the Brighter Sound’s Both Sides Now programme.

The composers can be based in any region of the UK, and acoustic composers who are looking to get into electronic music are welcome too.

The initiative will provide specialist coaching and mentoring support in compositional techniques with a view to composers establishing future performance opportunities with festivals and venues.

The facilities

In Huddersfield, the selected composers will compose new work to be presented on the 48-channel/66-loudspeaker Huddersfield Immersive Sound System (HISS). They will participate in an initial workshop on presenting work for electronics on large multichannel loudspeaker systems, learning about the HISS setup, loudspeaker configuration and diffusion techniques.

In Hull, composers will work in the Ambisonic Studio, a 3D surround-sound studio with 4-8-4 array, Barefoot stereo monitoring and fully adjustable lift.

Work produced during the residencies will be presented by the University of Hull’s HEARO collective in 2020.

An open call for composers will be issued at the end of this year.
