Madrid’s Q Studios is a facility that specialises in recording and mastering, and works with a variety of different music styles from indie and flamenco to Adult Oriented Rock (AOR) and electronic. It has recently installed an SSL AWS 900+ to help streamline production workflow and to control DAW systems and tape recorders. “We needed to adapt to the new age of downsized budgets in the music industry, while maintaining the high sonic quality of our projects,” says Q Studios’ owner Guillermo Quero. “We needed to omptimise our studio resources and the ability to control our Pro Tools and Logic DAWs, as well as our Studer eight-track recorder from the console. The AWS gives us that control, and the SSL SuperAnalogue sound; it was clearly the best choice.” The facility boasts two control rooms and a shared recording room. The AWS is housed in the larger control room, which is used mainly for mixing, and has a plethora of outboard gear; and the second, smaller control room is used for tracking, editing, and minor mixing. The AWS replaces a dedicated controller and ageing vintage analogue console that had become difficult to maintain. “We’d been struggling with an older console that was under constant repair, and while we liked the sound, the associated headaches were slowing our production throughput,” explains Quero. “The AWS gives us the sound quality we love, and the reliability and power we need to move forward. We have a lot of projects planned for the next year to be done with the AWS and our clientele has given a thumbs-up to the new set-up.”

IMW extends campus with SSL

Islington Music Workshop has invested in four different Solid State Logic consoles as part of an expansion of its teaching campus. Duality SE, AWS 948, Matrix and Nucleus consoles now form the centrepiece of each of four new studios at the central London operation.
