UK: A mere matter of months since the introduction of the Vi6, Soundcraft has added to the Vi Series of digital live sound consoles with the new Vi4 model. The desk has been introduced in response to calls for a "smaller footprint console" in space-sensitive environments like theatres and houses of worship, writes David Davies.

The new desk is said to offer all the functionality of its larger forerunner, and features access to 48 inputs on 24 faders and a total of 27 output busses available for use as masters, groups, auxes or matrices. The Vistonics II touch-screen interface and Soundcraft FaderGlow fader function display - both featured on the Vi6 - reappear on the more compact model.

Also available on the Vi4 is the new Processing Card option, adding eight assignable Lexicon Effects sections, plus 30-band BSS Audio graphic equalisers on every output.

Confirming the reasons for the new launch, Soundcraft's Dave Neal tells PSN-e: "The Soundcraft Vi4 was introduced because of demand for a smaler footprint console in space-conscious applications such as theatres, clubs and houses of worship. In these applications, the functionality is exactly what people need, but they are looking to conserve floorspace to allow for maximum seating capability."

Further range extensions are a possibility: "We have already committed to a digital future within Soundcraft, so not only might there be range extensions within the Vi Series, but also whole new ranges of digital consoles are in design."

The Vi6 - which, says Neal, has enjoyed strong sales into "all sectors: touring, install and even broadcast OB vans" - has been chosen for several prominent tours, including that of the Scissor Sisters, since it was introduced in mid-2006. The console has also been installed in a number of venues worldwide, include Singapore's Esplanade Theatre and London's Mean Fiddler.
