NAMM 2020: Waves Audio launches voice-controller synth and new version of eMotion

The latest version of eMotion LV1 is v11

OVox

Waves Audio, a leading developer of pro audio signal processing technologies and plugins, has launched multiple pro sound solutions at NAMM 2020 (booth 15302).

OVox Vocal ReSynthesis

OVox is a voice-controlled synthesiser and vocal effects processor. It can be used as a plugin or standalone app (with or without a DAW).

OVox supplies a variety of vocal synthesis and morphing options and delivers high-resolution sound quality with Organic ReSynthesis (ORS) technology. This technology takes your vocal signal and breaks it down to its core “DNA” elements—amplitude, pitch, and formant. It then re-synthesises these elements to create a new processed signal, without any of the artifacts that sometimes plague vocal synth-type instruments.

OVox’s workflow comes without the difficult routing typical of other vocoders and vocal synthesisers.  Furthermore, MIDI control is optional, meaning that you can use it without a keyboard or controller: simply use your voice (or a recorded vocal) to trigger chords, harmonies or scales.

There are hundreds of OVox presets that can be tweaked using the controls in OVox’s Main View. OVox’s Expanded View offers detailed control of its key component, the Formant Filter, which enables the OVox synth to mimic the human voice accurately.

The user also gets nine independent drag-and-drop modulators that can modulate any control within the plugin. These include four LFO/Sequencer modulators with 40 LFO shapes (plus the ability to draw your own custom shapes) and 16-step sequencer patterns; two traditional ADSR modulators; and three Organic ReSynthesis modulators that use the amplitude, pitch, and formant characteristics of your vocal to modulate other controls in the plugin.

OVox also has two vocal synthesis engines, OVox 1 and OVox 2, which you can control separately, based on a built-in eight-voice polyphonic synthesiser.

You can also use with OVox on drums, bass, and other instruments, in addition to vocals, or as a synth in its own right.

eMotion LV1 v11 Live Mixer

Waves has also launched eMotion LV1 v11, a new updated version of the eMotion LV1 live software mixer.

Based on Waves SoundGrid technology, each of the eMotion LV1’s channels has its own plugin rack capable of running up to eight Waves and third-party plugins. Subsequently, you can mix live with hundreds of plugins, all running inside the mixer itself.

The updates to v11 include Waves MyMon, a personal monitor mixing app for mobile devices, which communicates remotely with eMotion LV1 and gives musicians on stage direct control of their monitor mix.

v11 also increases the aux and matrix channel-count of each of the LV1’s three configurations. The 64-channel LV1 now features 16 monitor auxes; the 32-channel LV1 now features 16 monitor auxes and eight matrix mix busses; and the 16-channel LV1 now features eight matrix mix busses.

In addition, v11 expands the mixer’s I/O sharing abilities within a Waves SoundGrid network. Now, computers, DAWs, and hardware I/O devices can be shared between multiple eMotion LV1 systems. Other new features include improved store and recall of sessions, scenes and snapshots; tap tempo on the main toolbar; full integration with Waves’ v11 plugins; and full compatibility with Windows 10 and macOS 10.15 Catalina.

The mixer’s channel strip – its standard EQ, filters and dynamics processing – is provided by Waves eMo plugins: eMo D5 Dynamics, eMo F2 Filter and eMo Q4 Equaliser. The eMotion LV1 also integrates with the Dugan Speech and Dugan Automixer plugins (purchased separately), which are easily accessible from each LV1 channel.

eMotion LV1 owners with a current Waves Update Plan can download the latest version of eMotion LV1 free of charge.

FIT Controller for the eMotion LV1 Live Mixer

In addition, Waves has introduced the FIT Controller for the eMotion LV1.

FIT is an intuitive control surface that delivers efficient operation of the eMotion LV1 mixer to live sound engineers who prefer tactile response of faders, knobs and buttons for console operations.

The control surface is designed to function as a fully-integrated 16-fader bank with the LV1 mixer. This is made possible with 16 + 1 motorised 100mm faders, each featuring Mute, Solo, and Select buttons, a multi-function rotary control and a bright display for each channel. Fader banks are controlled using eight dedicated layer switches for toggling between the eight factory or custom layers in the Waves eMotion LV1 Live Mixer. The channel rotary controls can be set to adjust preamp gain or pan per channel with the corresponding function label shown in the display. In addition, the 16 Select channel toggles can be set to “USER” mode to provide easy access to Mute Groups and user-assignable keys.

The FIT controller also provides a Tap Tempo pad and a “Touch & Turn” knob for controlling any parameter selected on the eMotion LV1 screen. Additionally, common LV1 functions and modes can be controlled from the UTILITY section – Rotary mode selector, Save Session, Load Next Scene, Load Previous Scene, Store Scene, ALT/CTRL, and custom toggle.

This compact controller weighs only 4.5lb and can be fitted with rack ears to mount into a 19-inch 7U rack space. Rear panel connections include a USB Type B port for computer connection, 12V 2A DC power input, and two 5v 0.5A USB outlets for external LED lighting.
