Germany: Star turn at this year’s EVI Audio Hausmesse had to be Bavaria’s answer to the Kodo drummers, Industrial Drums. The trio were hired to herald – with much fire and fury – the forthcoming Dynacord PowerH amp range, what EVI Audio claims is the start of a “new age of hi-end power amplification”.

Telex/EVI Pro Audio Group president Mathias von Heydekampf had several messages to deliver at the ‘house fair’, the annual January gathering at the company’s HQ in Straubing. This year, 2006, marks the 20th anniversary of the fair, as well as the 60th of the Dynacord brand, and around 700 distributors, dealers and press from 60 countries were present to hear how the company had experienced a double-digit percentage increase in turnover last year.

Von Heydekampf was proud to reveal that, for the first time, EVI was conducting A/B tests during the fair, and that the company was not afraid to ‘put its head above the parapet’ and stand by any claims it might make about the high quality of its amplifiers. The new CL and CP Series Dynacord amps offer the “best ever value from a price-performance standpoint”, the president said.

All EVI audio kit will be ready for the new European RoHS lead-free compliancy directive when it comes into force on 1st July. When it comes to other manufacturers being as prepared, von Heydekampf said: “One component supplier told me that EVI had been the first company to even ask that supplier about RoHS compliance.” Switching to water-based welding flux back in August 2005 has lead to a reduction of 4,000kg annually in the use of solvents, he added.

During the two-day event, the company presented a number of forthcoming releases, including the Dynacord D12-3 and D 15-3 (ultra-compact lightweight full-range cabinets), SUB 118 (18-inch high performance subwoofer), Dynacord Switchmode Precision LX Series (ultra-lightweight power amplifiers), plus the Electro-Voice Netmax N8000 (digital matrix) and RE97Tx (head-worn microphone).

The annual Saturday night party embraced the early days of rock ’n’ roll, featuring Elvis tribute acts and quiffs for everyone – see Hither & Dither (p84) for the incriminating photos.
