EUROPE: Sir Cliff Richard undertook a European arena tour recently with a sound system based around Outline Butterfly units. Audio for this latest trek by the veteran singer - now approaching the 50th anniversary of his 1958 recording debut with Move It - was handled by Britannia Row, writes David Davies.

Having previously completed a Middle Eastern and south east Asian tour, Richard's European leg took him to cities including Helsinki and Frankfurt. At Britannia Row's disposal were 48 Outline Butterfly Hi-Pack units - generally utilised in two main hangs of 16 per side, with 8+8 for side seating - and 16 Subtech 218s. Six L-Acoustics' V-DOSC units were also used, along with Outline T series amplifiers and a pair of Dolby Lake processors. Centre of operations was a Yamaha PM5D console.

The audio team for the tour included PA chief Richard Trow, PA assistant Davide Lombardi and Michael "Bunny" Warren.

Lombardi tells PSN-e that the Outline Butterfly system "never disappointed us. It is a truly 90-degree horizontal dispersion so we were able to point it exactly where we needed, especially in venues like TUI (Hanover) or the Ahoy (Rotterdam), which can be very difficult rooms. In fact, we have received compliments from the house engineers for the great sound we have achieved there."

Britannia Row has also employed Outline Butterfly systems on a number of other recent tours, including those by James Taylor, Pet Shop Boys and Groove Armada, along with individual shows by Van Morrison, Patti Smith and Pink Martini.
