Audio awards aplenty at Grammys, BAFTAs

A trio of British artists took home Grammy Awards this weekend, while Les Misérables and Skyfall scooped up an audio BAFTA each.

A trio of British artists took home Grammy Awards this weekend, while Les Misérables and Skyfall scooped up an audio BAFTA each.

Pro-audio gongs rang out at the weekend’s award bashes, with a trio of British artists taking home Grammy Awards, and the BAFTAs recognizing excellence in film sound and music. Mumford & Sons' Babel won a Grammy for Album of the Year. The album was engineered by Robin Baynton at studios across the UK including Eastcote Studios (winner of the 2012 MPG Studio of the Year Award. PSNEurope also has the full list of the 2013 MPG Award winners), British Grove and Rak amongst a handful of American and international studios. Their Grammy Award was presented by Adele (pictured, right, with Marcus Mumford), who herself won for Best Pop Solo Performance for Set Fire to the Rain from the album Live at The Royal Albert Hall. Adele’s performance was captured by veteran sound engineer Toby Alington. The final British artist to take home a Grammy was Sir Paul McCartney, winning Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for Kisses on the Bottom. Though recorded primarily in America with engineer Al Schmitt, additional recording was done for the album at Abbey Road Studios in London and Hog Hill Mill, East Sussex. At the BAFTAs, the James Bond franchise took home the award for best Original Film Music for the Adele-performed Skyfall. Composer Thomas Newman, working on his first Bond film, previously won the same award for his score to American Beauty in 2000, also directed by Skyfall director Sam Mendes. Winning the BAFTA for best Film Sound was the epic musical Les Misérables, which sought to capture actors’ performances live, on set. Amongst the sound crew working on the project were Simon Hayes (production sound mixer), Andy Nelson (sound re-recording mixer), Jonathan Allen (Abbey Road Studios), Lee Walpole (supervising sound editor), John Warhurst (supervising sound editor) and Mark Paterson (mixer)

Award season rolls around again

UK/US: This year's BAFTA Film Awards brought a special award for Pinewood and Shepperton Studios, writes David Davies. The studios - which joined forces in 2001 - were acknowledged for their Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the 2009 event, which took place at the Royal Opera House in London on February 8th. Meanwhile, the technical categories of the Grammy Awards saw recognition for producers Rick Rubin and David Frost.
