Chris Tsangarides’ credits include Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Depeche Mode and – yes! – Anvil, writes David Davies. The ‘Hit Masterclass’ holiday music courses at Tsangarides’ Ecology Rooms studio in Dover, Kent, will give aspiring producers the opportunity to gain an insight into production, mixing, arranging and performance techniques.
Participants will also have the opportunity to be credited as assistant engineers on new recordings produced during the courses, which see Tsangarides team up with France-based music studio Beneath the Underdog.
The courses – which are not currently geared towards beginners – include accommodation and are limited to a select group of four students per week. It is expected that 8-10 courses will take please before the end of September.
“We feel this is the right time to offer this kind of course due to the lack of tape-op/tea-boy jobs in studios today,” Tsangarides (pictured) tells PSN-e. “Most studios are cutting staff, and the traditional career path of people starting out in this business has been cut short. So by taking a Hit Masterclass course, aspiring producers can work alongside professionals and pick up knowledge.”
While the courses are “not designed as basic engineering classes”, it is Tsangarides’ expectation that students will leave with “a greater knowledge of studio craft than before. Tips on how to polish a song into a hit and arrangement skills will be covered, as will dealing with difficult artists and recording industry insights.”
