Sony Music UK is the first major company to pledge financial support to allow Music Venue Trust to continue its work protecting grassroots music venues.

The Music Venue Trust team asked delegates for their backing and support at this year's Venues Day, which took place on October 17 at the Ministry of Sound, attended by more than 500 people.

The charity hopes that this commitment from Sony will encourage further financial support from key players in the UK music industry.

Jason Iley, chairman and CEO of Sony Music UK, said: "Sony is committed to supporting and developing artists from grassroots to festival headliners. We recognise the vital role that grassroots music venues play in that journey, providing an essential platform for artists to be able to take their first steps and develop their audiences.

“These venues are the heart of our music communities, and we support the work of Music Venue Trust to protect, secure and improve them."

Having launched in 2014, Music Venue Trust is now struggling to meet demand for its services (including the Emergency Action Fund) running with a small team and limited resources.

MVT strategic director Beverley Whitrick said: “We will be focusing on strengthening music industry relationships and working with our network of venues, the Music Venues Alliance, to fundraise, and to take forward priorities identified at [Venues Day 2017]. We hope to have news of Fightback gigs very soon.”

Fightback is a line-up of fundraising gigs arranged by Music Venue Trust to raise money for the charity. Details of the 2017/18 concerts are yet to be announced.
