Scarlette Fever have come a long way in the last 12 months. Having toured with major acts including Roachford and Mike and the Mechanics (the latter of which involved a performance at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall), the five-piece have honed their sound and done their mechanical royalties no harm as a number of their tracks have made the top ten in various iTunes charts.
This week’s showcase took place at Floriditas, which has been open since 2004 and is located at 100 Wardour Street, the same site where the legendary Marquee club used to stand. I was informed beforehand that the acoustics are fairly notorious in the venue, yet the sound on the night was tight, full of body, and crystal clear; and despite there being no low-end reinforcement at all, it really felt like there was, courtesy of a rich sounding D.A.S Audio PA system and a sufficiently low ceiling.
Stage monitoring was achieved via four Electro-Voice and two LD Systems wedges, and the FOH console was a digital PreSonus Studio Live 24. Scarlette, who is also a vocal coach, is a big Shure fan when it comes to vocal mics, and has used a Beta 58A for several years, for its clarity and headroom.
“I feel that the [Shure] Beta 58 provides a really nice warm low-end, and it suits the tone of my voice,” she says. “It was the first quality microphone I bought, and it has never let me down, whether it’s an acoustic-led track, or a real hard-hitting number.”
An audience of industry moguls representing various indie labels as well as Radio 2 and Channel 4 witnessed a slick and well-rehearsed 30-minute show, which featured some nicely written material – particularly the track Single White Female, which I was still humming along to this morning. Guitarist Chris Moorhead provided the growl via his oversized Chuck Berry-esque Ibanez guitar and vintage Vox AC30 amplifier, and it was nice to see Scarlette pick up the acoustic guitar for several songs, which certainly added another texture to the band’s sound.
Next up for Scarlette Fever is a string of high-profile shows including Manchester’s Ruby Lounge, Leeds Irish Centre, The Bedford in Balham, and the legendary 100 Club.
