HOLLAND: The awards were presented at a ceremony held as part of the Eurosonic Noorderslag Conference and Showcase Festival in Groningen, The Netherlands, reports PSN-e. Described as the first poll of its kind, the European Festival Awards were determined by a combination of public vote and industry jury.
Earning in excess of 100,000 votes through the Virtual Festivals Europe portal alone, the 2010 event brought particular recognition for the busy Belgian festival scene. Winners included: the Heineken Open’er Festival, Poland (Best Major Festival); Dour Festival, Belgium (Best Medium-Sized Festival); Cactusfestival, Belgium (Best Small Festival), Openfields Festival, Belgium (Best New European Festival); Rock Werchter, Belgium (Best Line-Up); Coldplay – ‘Viva la Vida’ (Festival Anthem of the Year, in association with EBU); White Lies (Best Artist Newcomer, in association with Eurosonic); and The Prodigy (Best Headline Artist).
A further four categories were assessed by an industry jury of journalists, booking agents, managers, artists and promoters, with winners including : _ya Festivalen, Norway (Green ‘N’ Clean Festival, in association with Yourope); Rock Werchter, Belgium (Artists’ Favourite Festival); Herman Schueremans of Live Nation, Belgium (Promoter of the Year); and Pinkpop founder Jan Smeets.
