CANADA: Holophone TV 5.1 is available for free through the Apple iTunes Store, writes David Davies. As a result, iPod, iPhone and Apple TV users will be able to experience an entire 5.1 podcast captured by Holophone's range of surround microphones, which includes the H4 SuperMINI (pictured), PortaMic 5.1 and PortaMic 5.1 Pro.

An extensive range of content is promised for the new podcasts, which are being offered as free downloads from the iTunes Store. A new podcast will be posted each month.

The recording process entails the use of Holophone surround mics to capture six channels of audio, which are then encoded to two channels using Dolby Pro Logic technology. These recordings are brought back to 5.1 when routed via a ProLogic II decoder or played through a Dolby Digital decoder, such as those found on Apple TV.

Jonathan Godfrey, CEO of Holophone, tells PSN-e: "Podcasts are one of the most rapidly-growing broadcast mediums today, but the audio featured in them is too often of surprisingly low quality, being produced and delivered with almost antiquated equipment. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me when there are means available to effectively bring an immersive cinematic experience to this cutting-edge medium. Holophone wants to be at the forefront of this movement by helping make 5.1 podcasts a reality using our wide range of surround microphones. With Holophone TV 5.1, we're looking to act as a role model and an informational resource for those looking to take their podcasts to the next level."

In addition to providing exclusive content, Holophone is looking to offer those new to the podcasting world a model from which they can base their own podcasts.
