The UK’s annual Poppy Appeal was officially launched on 24 October in London’s Trafalgar Square, with Capital Sound taking responsibility for the full production for a third year. Opening the show with a fanfare of trumpets was 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards. Subsequent performers included British singer Alesha Dixon, The Military Wives Choir, actor James Fox – who sang the Poppy Appeal Launch single, ‘Landlocked’ – and a headline performance by Pixie Lott. Sky Sports’ Ben Shepard hosted the event. "As a full production job for Capital, you literally have to supply everything from the ground up," said Capital's Charles Ellery, who was recently awarded both an Operational Service Medal and Iraq Medal for his work on military productions in Iraq and Afghanistan. "We supplied staging, lighting and sound, with the video element arranged by the Royal British Legion's own in-house video production supplier, Raw. We also arranged for all the dressing room cabins, temporary loos, catering, first aid, special FX and so on." Capital Sound’s audio team included Joseph Pearce (crew chief and system tech), Nick Foots (FOH), Steve Bunting (monitors), Craig Bruce (RF and stage tech), Nathan Hayward (PA/stage tech), Karima Kingsley (PA/stage tech), Harry McCann (PA/stage tech), and Louisa Gladwin (Monitors/stage tech), who, according to Ellery, all did a sterling job. "With changeovers of only three minutes between bands, it was very tight for time," he said, "but the crew performed incredibly well after a long night rigging and testing and it all went off very smoothly." The Poppy Appeal aims to raise £42 million this year. Donations can be made through the Royal British Legion website. www.capital-sound.co.uk
