ASD raises profile at PLASA

The Association of Sound Designers (ASD) is a new organisation deciated to representing the interests of sound designers in the UK theatre industry, and launched at PLASA on Sunday, writes Paul Watson.

The Association of Sound Designers (ASD) was set up to connect the widely dispersed sound design community, to educate and promote high standards, and bring the client and designer together within the industry. Already boasting a growing membership as well as corporate sponsorship, ASD was launched at PLASA last Sunday in a bid to raise its public profile, which has reportedly already seen significant growth during the show. “As people become more aware, more of them are signing up,”says Gregg Fisher, head of theatre sound design with BA honours for the Central School of Speech and Drama. “The industry needs to support its people, and actually the support has been overwhelming. We always knew there was a need for it; and PLASA allowed us to put our message across face-to-face.” Fisher says ASD has already earmarked a few development training events including seasonal training in association with Yamaha, one of its partners, during the festival season. Other ASD partners include Meyer Sound, DiGiCo, Bose, DPA, and Blitz Communications.

PLASA and ESTA vote for merger

More than 90% of members from each Association voted in support of the move, which will see ESTA and PLASA integrated to create a single international trade association operating under the PLASA name.
