Sound Technology supplies AV gear for University of Exeter

Sound Technology supplied a wide range of Harman Pro audio brands – including Crown, dbx, JBL and BSS Soundweb –installed in The Forum: a new multi-million project at the University of Exeter.

A wide range of Harman Pro audio brands – including Crown, dbx, JBL and BSS Soundweb – have been installed in the technology-rich learning spaces found in The Forum: a new £48 million (€59.8 million) project situated in the heart of the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus. The Forum’s vast AV system was installed by GV Multi-media, commissioned by the university’s main contractor Sir Robert Mcalpine, with pro-audio components provided by UK and ROI distributors, Sound Technology. These are found within the Forum’s Auditorium, two Exploration Labs, a Multimedia Room, Seminar Training Room and the Seminar Block and Group Study Room — as well as a new Student Services Centre, refurbished library, retail and catering outlets. International consulting engineers Buro Happold put together the specifications for the Forum’s centerpiece, the 404-seat Alumni Auditorium. All audio within the space is transported through CobraNet protocol devices – including BSS Soundweb DSP and streamed to appropriate areas via a pair of Ethernet switches installed in a separate remote amplifier rack. The speaker setup features JBL ScreenArray cinema range cabinets powered by Crown CTs amplifiers, and an Assisted Reverb System (ARS) as part of a 7.1 surround system. Elsewhere, the first Exploration Lab also boasts a full AV spec with the audio passed into a DSP processor to allow routing, via a Crown CTs 600 power amplifier, to a pair of JBL CBT 100LA line array column speakers. A further four JBL CBT 100LA’s are installed in the Exploration Labs’ Group Study room. Daniel Victory, GV Multi-media’s national technical manager, commented on the installation: “The BSS Soundweb worked extremely well with the CTs amplifiers and JBL ScreenArray. We are extremely proud of what we have achieved at The Forum, creating at the heart of the University a hub of AV technology.”
