The UK-based loudspeaker manufacturer has been marking the completion of its second decade with a conference and awards event in London, and the introduction of an appropriately-titled new product range.

In a multi-tiered event held at the British Music Experience within The O2 in late September, PMC marked its 20th anniversary with a conference, gala dinner, awards ceremony and special exclusive concert for staff, international distributors, UK retailers and guests.

Following an introduction by PMC MD Miles Roberts, special guest speaker and inspirational business thinker Emmanuel Gobillott spoke of the need to readdress the way in which we view the services offered to customers. After an overview of the company’s marketing activities, and an in-depth presentation on PMC’s loudspeaker design philosophy and proprietary Advanced Transmission Line technology from owner and chief designer Peter Thomas, the company took the opportunity to unveil the twenty series.

The result of three years’ R&D, the twenty series comprises two stand mount models (the twenty.21 and twenty.22) and two floor-standers (twenty.23 and twenty.24). Features include PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology and an entirely new set of components, including drive units, crossovers, binding posts, cabinets, plinths and spikes. A new Sonolex fabric dome tweeter developed in conjunction with Seas of Norway is said to provide a ‘phenomenal’ off-axis response thanks to the new dispersion grille. The tweeter is matched to the new twenty M13 and M17 bass/mid drive units, with both drive units mounted in a newly designed cabinet manufactured from 18mm Medite HDF.

Each speaker within the range is available in a choice of three real wood veneers – Oak, Walnut and Amarone – and a new high gloss finish, Diamond Black. Each model comes with an invisible magnet-fixing grille, finished in an exclusive warm black textured PMC cloth.

Peter Thomas commented: “Starting with a blank sheet of paper and the brief to produce a new range that can do justice to the reputation that the iSeries has gained since it was introduced was a tough challenge. Our team has worked very hard to produce the four new models and I am extremely pleased with the results. I am particularly happy with the developments we have made in our Advanced Transmission Line technology and the incredible bass performance that this has enabled us to produce from the modestly-sized twenty.21 model. Music lovers are going to be very pleased with the results from this and all the models in the range.”

Following the introduction of the twenty series and a brief slideshow history of PMC, Thomas was joined by BBC Radio 2 presenter Richard Allison to present awards to a long roll-call of PMC distributors, namely: Avitech, Austria (Innovative Marketing); Stage Acoustics, The Netherlands (Most Improved Performance), Hibino, Japan (Persistence and Tenacity in the Face of the Country’s Recent Disasters); and Titan 3D, Thailand (Best Newcomer). In addition, UK retailer awards were bestowed upon: Unilet Sound & Vision (pictured above, Innovative Marketing); Zinc (the Best Retail Experience); Lintone Audio (Most Improved Performance); and Fanthorpes (Best Newcomer).

The evening concluded with a host of musical surprises. Former XTC guitarist/keyboardist performed a set with his new band, Tin Spirits, with Marillion members Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth joining the line-up for a selection of rock and pop classics.

“We’ve come a long way in the last 20 years,” said MD Miles Roberts earlier in the evening, “from just one speaker in a workshop to a world class range of studio monitors used by the leading recording professionals and a critically acclaimed range of hi-fi speakers. It is testament to the hard work and dedication of you, our distributors and retailers, that we have been so successful.”
