Oscar makes four: Les Misérables wins big for sound

An Oscar for Best Sound Mixing is the fourth gong awarded to Mark Peterson of Goldcrest Post for his work as part of the sound team of Les Misérables. The film also took home a BAFTA, CAS Award and MPSE Golden Reel for sound.

Les Misérables’ sound team wrapped up Awards season in spectacular style this weekend, as re-recording mixer Mark Paterson (pictured, center) joined production mixer Simon Hayes (pictured, left) and fellow re-recording mixer Andy Nelson (pictured, right) on stage to accept an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing.

The Oscar Award followed two audio industry awards in addition to the BAFTA award for Best Sound: The sound mixing team won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Live Action at the at the 49th Annual CAS Award on 16 February followed by a Golden Reel Award for Best Sound Editing: Music in a Musical Feature Film at the 60th Annual Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards the following day.

The film was mixed at HALO Post in Soho, while ADR and effects pre-mix were completed at Goldcrest Post – where Paterson usually works as resident mixer. In an email from Los Angeles, he said:

“Tom Hooper’s vision to make a musical using dialogues recorded live on set provided us with a fantastic opportunity to to work on a movie that is experimental and attempting to do new things with sound. It provided the actors with a platform to express themselves, as well as the sound crew, and we are all so happy that this has been recognised by the academy, BAFTA, CAS and MPSE. I hope our work can begin to pave the way for a new approach to sound in feature film musicals for the future.”

Goldcrest’s CEO, Keith Williams was thrilled with Paterson’s success: “We’ve seen Mark’s talent grow over the years and we are so pleased to see his professional talent recognised with an Academy Award as well as BAFTA, CAS and MPSE Golden Reel Awards for Les Misérables this month.

“It’s been an incredibly exciting finale to a great year at Goldcrest working with so many highly acclaimed films including Aardman’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits who were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film as well as Skyfall. Both films’ post teams spent considerable time in the past year with us so we’re thrilled for their success too this season. The Brits have done well to say the least. Our highly regarded colleague and friend Andy Nelson is at the Academy Awards for the 18th time and Mark is there for his first of what we are confident will be plenty more in his career.”
