CU-29 ‘Copperhead’ was the winning submission in a contest to name the latest microphone from TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik. Patrick Williams, who suggested the name, will receive a matched pair of the new Copperheads.
Second place winners – Hans Hasselhaven of Lystrup, Denmark, Daniel Bronson of Alberta, Canada, and Edward Coffman of Englewood, Colorado – will each receive a TELEFUNKEN M80 dynamic mic sporting the same custom antique copper finish found on the CU-29.
In development for 18 months and based around a unique circuit featuring a New Old Stock (NOS) TELEFUNKEN vacuum tube, custom audio transformer and a fixed cardioid large diaphragm console, the new product is priced at $1295 – making it the first large diaphragm tube microphone from TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik to break below the $1500 price range. Each mic system comes complete with power supply, 20’ mic-to-power supply cable, shockmount and wooden box.
Director of operations Alan Veniscofsky tells PSNE: “The response to our ‘name the mic’ contest was overwhelming, with thousands of suggestions from all over the world. Only one person combined the name ‘Copperhead’ with CU-29, which is the atomic name for copper in the periodic table of elements. We are very proud of this mic, the result of some very serious R&D. To make it available at this affordable price means that many discerning artists, producers and engineers can now have a great tool for their creative work.”
