Masataka Goto, Sir George Martin confirmed for AES

The AES - whose executive director, Roger Furness, is pictured - has announced two special guests for this weekend's Convention in London: Sir George Martin and music technology scientist Masataka Goto.

Music technology research scientist Masataka Goto has been confirmed as the Keynote Speaker at the Convention’s opening ceremony on 22 May, while the Convention’s final day will feature an appearance from Sir George Martin CBE, who will accept an Honorary Membership from the AES before introducing one of the afternoon seminars.

Leader of the Media Interaction Group at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan, Goto is an acknowledged leader in the development of music technologies and music interface, including speech recognition and artificial voice systems. At AES London, he will address the subject of ‘Music Listening In the Future’ and examine the ways in which current developments in speech recognition and music analysis/detection software may change the way we all listen to music over the next few years.

Pioneering Beatles producer and APRS president Sir George Martin has been active in the music and recording worlds for 60 years, and his remarkable achievements will be acknowledged this year with Honorary Membership of the AES.

“The AES is delighted to present George Martin with this award,” commented AES executive director Roger Furness (pictured). “The ranks of those who have previously received an AES Honorary Membership include Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Walt Disney, and Herbert von Karajan, and I can think of no finer addition to their number than Sir George Martin. We’re also excited to welcome Masataka Goto to London to deliver the Keynote Address at the opening ceremony — we expect a good time will be had by all who can attend.”

Masataka Goto’s address will be delivered at 12.30 on 22 May, whilst the presentation to Sir George will take place before the final AES/APRS-organised seminar at the Convention at 2pm on 25 May. All visitors to the AES Convention are welcome to attend.

With a host venue of Novotel London West, this year’s AES Europe is the first to be staged in the UK capital for 23 years. Full details via the AES website (link below).
