InfoComm double for Music Group: Turbo bought, Midas PRO 1 revealed

Uli Behringer’s Music Group scored a double at InfoComm, with the acquisition of UK-based loudspeaker brand Turbosound, and the launch of the Midas PRO 1 compact console.

Uli Behringer’s Music Group dominated the headlines on the opening day of InfoComm in Las Vegas, with news of the acquisition of UK-based loudspeaker brand Turbosound, and the launch of the PRO 1 compact console from Midas (pictured), write James McGrath and Dave Robinson.

The purchase of 42-year-old PA specialist Turbosound follows long-term speculation about Music Group’s interest in adding a professional loudspeaker brand to its offering. Turbosound joins Midas and Klark Teknik, both acquired by the holding company in December 2009.

Italian audio group Proel originally bought Turbosound in 2007, but, arguably, has not developed the brand as much as industry observers might have expected. Uli Behringer has promised to “invest heavily in positioning [the brand]” from the outset. ‘Turbo’ is expected to benefit from Music Group’s extensive infrastructure, while still retaining its own manufacturing, sales, marketing and distribution network worldwide. Turbosound MD Simon Blackwood commented: “With the incredible people and resources of the Music Group behind us, I am thrilled to enter a new era of unprecedented growth.”

Uli Behringer added that $20m invested in Midas Klark Teknik so far has led to “a new automated manufacturing, quality control systems and engineering resources, including a new Centre of Engineering Excellence in Manchester, UK”.

Following the corporate announcement, Midas went on to debut the latest in its ever-more-compact console range, the PRO 1 live audio system.

Featuring an all-new lightweight aluminium frame, the PRO 1 is the first stand-alone Midas digital console. It is said to be easy to configure and operate, compatible with the complete range of Midas digital consoles and allows existing show files to be loaded and worked on straight away.

Other notable features include 24 mic/line inputs with Midas mic preamps; 48 simultaneous input processing channels; 24 analogue outputs (including two stereo local monitor outputs); three AES3 outputs; and two AES3 inputs.

Midas brand development manager Richard Ferriday commented: “The PRO1 opens new territory for Midas on a number of different levels. New manufacturing materials and techniques, the first stand-alone Midas digital console, with comprehensive I/O on the back, and a previously undreamt-of price point. The PRO1 will be accessible to freelance engineers, small music venues, anyone who actually cares about audio quality, reliability and portability.”
