US: More than 100 avid golfers participated in the 14th Annual TEC LA Open Charity Golf Tournament, writes Mel Lambert. Presented by the Mix Foundation for Excellence in Audio and sponsored for the second year by Guitar Center Professional, the event took place on May 11 at the Malibu Country Club and attracted a broad cross-section of music producers and engineers, together with professionals from leading production facilities, manufacturers and distributors.
This year’s Honorary Chairman was veteran engineer Al Schmitt. Other sponsors included Shure, Pass Studios, Recording Academy’s P&E Wing, Record Plant and Sennheiser. Proceeds from the tournament support Mix Foundation’s educational programmes, including the TEC Awards and TECnology Hall of Fame.
First place went to Natural Soundfields Limited (Avis Gart, Richard Gordon, Mike Cruz and Eric Tomooka) with a score of 57; second to Ed Cherney Team (Cherney, Scott Thurston, Frank Pirruccello and Jerry Kanter) with a score of 61; third to The Village Studios (Charlie Bidwell, Ken Cross, Rudy Tomjunovich and Kyle Wehba), also with a score of 61 but which lost on a card-off versus the second-place team with a birdie on hole 5. The Longest Drive went to Kyle Wehba from The Village; Closest to Pin to Alex Brown, guitar player Paul Brown’s 15-year old son; Longest Putt to Rudy Tomjonovich, former head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team; and Putting Contest to Jason Toney, regional sales manager with Universal Audio.
The day concluded with a dinner and awards presentation, along with a raffle and silent auction of donated audio equipment from Shure, Rode, Audio-Technica, Apogee, Mojave Audio, IK Multimedia and Brauner, plus a Gibson guitar and gift packages.
The Mix Foundation was established in 1990 by former publishers of Mix magazine, but is not associated with Penton Media, which currently owns Mix.
“The TEC LA Open has established a tradition of friendly competition and generous support of the Mix Foundation’s programmes,” says tournament director Karen Dunn. “We are grateful to the many companies that sponsored the event in this time of economic uncertainty.”
