EV kits out Four Hills ski tournament

TC Showtechnik deployed Electro-Voice gear for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen leg of ski jumping’s Four Hills tournament, writes Paul Watson

For 59 years, the Upper Bavarian resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been one of the four venues for the annual world renowned Four Hills ski-jumping tournament; and on 1st January 2011, this year’s event attracted no less than 25,000 fans. For the fifth year running, Weilheim headquartered rental company TC Showtechnik was responsible for all sound reinforcement, which, not for the first time at this event, comprised of Electro-Voice equipment, including an XLD line array and NetMax digital matrix controller. The main array included sixteen EV XLD 218 elements flown at a 14m from a tower; eight flown Dynacord V17 enclosures; and six EV X-Subs for the low end. Eight additional XLDs were deployed on a delay line, and the system was driven by two EV CPS 4.10 power amplifiers and one EV CPS 8.5. Co-manager of TC Showtechnik Martin Schulze chose the XLD system because of its size and power. “After optimising and adding to the system several times, we arrived at the ideal set-up for this event, which we don’t propose now to change,” he explains. “We are fortified in this resolution by the outstanding feedback we received once again this year regarding the sound.” As in previous years, the same dB constraints applied to this year’s production. A particularly stringent area was the ‘mix gate’, which is the area reserved for TV and radio interviews, where a 6dB reduction was required. “This stipulation used to be a source of stress for us,” adds Schulze. “But now that we have an Electro-Voice N8000-1500 loudspeaker controller we can sleep easy, as it makes a segmented sound reinforcement solution a simple matter.”
