D.A.S. in pole position at European Grand Prix

Audio systems from D.A.S. provided sound coverage for the grandstand areas during the recent Formula One European Grand Prix in Spain, writes David Davies.

Valencia-based Sagarmanta Producciones assembled a team of more than 30 people to set-up audio coverage for the 14 grandstands at this year’s Formula One European Grand Prix at the Valencia Street Circuit in Spain, deploying a fibre optic ring and CobraNet-based D.A.S audio distribution system as the foundation. The company also installed an individual automatic signal system for each of the grandstands, for emergency purposes, as well as providing sound for the podium and award presentation areas. Integral to the audio spec were 115 D.A.S. Audio Aero12A self-powered line array cabinets. The systems – part of the D.A.S. Audio Aero Series 2 range – helped Sagarmanta to accommodate a variety of stand configurations. For example, some of the stands were completely straight, while others were curved. Seating capacities also varied considerably. The units were placed on truss-type structured podiums, the angles of which could be adjusted through the arrangement of two vertical threaded shafts. The cabinets were distributed with an average distance of 8-10m between each. In addition to the 115 units deployed, the sound team had access to 15 back-up cabinets, which were not required. The audio network for the event was overseen from a control centre located in the pit stop area. The fibre optic ring and CobraNet solution is said to have yielded ‘unified signal management that minimised the delay effects between adjacent stands, as well as possible synchronisation problems among the most remote areas’.
