Renowned audio engineer Karlheinz Brandenburg – who made significant developments to the MP3/MPEG standards – will give a Richard C. Heyser Lecture Series presentation during the AES Convention this week.
In a lecture entitled ‘How to Provide High Quality Audio Everywhere: the MP3 Story and More’ (Saturday 14 May, 1830-2000), Brandenburg will assess the development of the MP3 and its implications for audio quality, music industry business practices and availability of content. He will also discuss current research efforts into MIR (Music Information Retrieval) and audio reproduction.
Explaining the background to his presentation, Prof. Brandenburg told PSNE: “In the not-too-distant past we were faced with the challenge of transmitting high-quality audio over phone lines. While this seemed impossible at the time, ideas from psychoacoustics and signal processing and work by many researchers helped the seemingly impossible to become reality; mp3 and other audio codecs enabled the seamless transport of audio over legacy copper phone lines.
“However, the mp3 story did not end there. The Internet was being transformed from a text-based medium into a major carrier for sound of all kinds, including music. This meant changes not only for the payload (from text to audio), but also new dangers for the audio quality delivered to music lovers. And it changed business models for music sales dramatically, shaking the foundations of the music industry. Today the challenges are different. We have a multitude of legal sources of music and many of us have access to Terabytes of music. How do we find our way through this abundance of available content? How do we find the gems in the vast archive of medium-quality music? As audio reproduction is still far from perfect, how can we really fulfill the dream of complete auditory illusion? What problems still need to be solved? The talk will introduce some current work on MIR (Music Information Retrieval), audio reproduction, and the psychoacoustic research needed to move closer to the dream of perfectly reconstructed sound.”
Another must-attend event is set to be Barry Marshall’s presentation, ‘Phil Spector and the Legacy of the Svengali Producer’ (Sunday 15 May, 1430-1615). An in-depth exploration of Spector’s artistic legacy, the session will trace his development from early work with Atlantic Records and formidable songwriting duo Leiber & Stoller, through his peak career years as producer/label head at Philles, and on to later work with John Lennon, George Harrison and the Ramones.
A controversial figure long before his 2009 conviction for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson, Spector is currently serving a prison sentence of 19 years to life. His last released production work was two tracks for UK band Starsailor’s 2003 album, Silence Is Easy.
The Spector event will be jointly hosted by the AES and the APRS.
The 130st Audio Engineering Convention will be held at the Novotel London West Convention Center, May 13-16.
