Stage Electrics has been appointed by Leeds Beckett university to develop its new creative arts building.

Stage Electrics and Leeds Beckett have established a £2.5 million contract, under which Stage Electrics will supply film and tv studio lighting hoists, production lighting, sound, video and communications infrastructure, and motorised grid systems for Leeds Beckett’s new building.

Two venue consultants have been employed due to the scale and variety of the project: Arup Venues will be in charge of the design of of five film and tv studios, three performing arts studios, the music studio, and mixing and screening rooms, whilst Charcoalblue will be responsible for an 180-seat theatre, an 80-seat studio theatre, and a 230-seat cinema theatre.

Matthew Addison, senior technical project manager at Stage Electrics, commented: “The term ‘state of the art’ gets thrown around a lot, but this project is a true reflection of a state-of-the-art development. The Leeds Beckett creative arts building is a professional standard of specification that students will benefit from for years to come. We are excited to begin this project knowing that, along with drawing on Leeds Beckett’s strong heritage for diverse learning skills and opportunities, we’re playing our part in providing a new city landmark.”

Ian Dunne, Stage Electrics’ regional commercial manager said: “Matthew’s extensive experience of managing the technical fit-out of both television studios and large-scale theatrical venues makes him the perfect member of our team to manage this complex project.”

With its array of studios and theatres, it will be home to the school of film and the music and performing arts departments. The project will commence in June 2019 and the building is set to open in mid-2020.
