GERMANY: This Thursday (October 18th) will see the official opening of SAE Institute's new campus in Berlin. Possessing in excess of 5000sqm of floor space - more than double that of its predecessor - SAE Berlin is billed as the largest state-of-the-art private media campus in Europe and will train more than 600 students each year, writes David Davies.

Intended to yield the "expert web designers, directors, audio engineers and game designers the industry is looking for," the new campus is the latest manifestation of the SAE Institute's focus on innovative teaching methods and hands-on training using the latest technology. The new facility will also provide the opportunity to try out new courses - including game design - that are not currently offered at the Institute's other facilities.

"Berlin has become a very attractive city for students to move to for financial and cultural reasons, [as demonstrated by] increasing enrolment and the growing number of jobs in the area," SAE Institute managing director Rudi Grieme tells PSN-e. "We responded to this by finding a very attractive property with a size of 5,000sqm, giving us the opportunity to build up a European headquarter centre where we can also try out new courses that are not yet in the programme [elsewhere] in Europe."

Coinciding with the official opening will be the third annual SAE Alumni Convention, which will adopt a bilingual format (English and German) for the first time this year. The two-day event will include workshops, panel discussions and lectures, while the accompanying trade show will host 40-45 exhibitors and new or recent products from companies including Sennheiser, Roland and AMS Neve, whose Genesys console is to make its European exhibition debut following its launch at AES New York earlier this month (read more).

"We are expecting between 1,500 and 2,000 people to attend," notes Grieme. "The trade show was so successful last year that we have doubled up [in size] this year, and it's still completely booked up."

The first day of the event will also include the Convention Party. To be held at Berlin's Postbahnof, the party will feature live performances and the 2007 SAE Alumni Awards.
