UK/BELGIUM: The main assembly hall and dance/drama studio at Reading's John Madejski Academy - the latest in a series of dedicated training establishments in England, this one specialising in sport - have been equipped with Martin Audio AQ series products by Leicester-based Hawthorn Theatrical, writes David Davies.
In the main assembly hall, AQ15s, AQ10s and AQ212 subs have been installed as part of a sound system that also includes Allen & Heath's iDR8 DSP and MixWizard 16:2. The latter, along with a mobile rack including radio mics, will enable staff to undertake live mixing.
The drama studio, meanwhile, features a single Martin AQ12 flown in each of the room's four corners. Hawthorn Theatrical has also fitted-out a recording studio, which will be used as part of the Academy's curriculum.
Simon Ling, Hawthorn's installation manager, described the AQ series as "a great sounding product which fits within budget and does not require a vast amount of processing. On top of that the AQ boxes are relatively compact [and] quick to install."
In other recent Martin Audio install news, the increasing popularity of the W8LM line array has been reinforced by an installation in the 536-seat main hall of the De Schakel venue in Waregem, Belgium. Local supply, install and rental company Big Dynamic - under the auspices of owner Johan Van Dorpe - worked with De Schakel's Frank D'Haene and Steven Vandendriessche in specifying a system comprising three W8LMIs and a W8LMDI (downfill) on each side, with additional WS2A subs flown next to the line array clusters to free the stage and ground floor. Four mobile WT15s have also been installed on the front stage apron to provide near-fills.
The whole system is powered by the new Crest CC range amplifiers and XTA DP448 controllers, with stage monitoring from Martin Audio's LE1200s.
"This investment in a high quality fixed sound system is the best decision I have made during my time in De Schakel," observed D'Haene. "It is fantastic to get compliments from artists who perform here; they feel at ease, and more and more rental companies that tour with these artists leave their equipment in the truck and use ours instead. That's a real compliment!"
