UK: In a move that will complement the ABTT Theatre Show 2007, the ABTT has announced that it is sponsoring the first annual conference to be hosted by the Theatres Trust. 'Performing Theatres?' - to be held in London on June 12th - follows on from the 2006 ABTT Theatre, Architecture and Engineering Conference in examining the best ways to maximise theatre design in the 21st century and the role of technology in this process, reports PSN-e.

The one-day event will be chaired by West Yorkshire Playhouse artistic director Ian Brown, London Southbank Centre director of creative innovation Venu Dhupa, and former National Theatre executive director Genisa McIntosh. It will take place at London's Young Vic immediately before the 29th ABTT Theatre Show, which is scheduled for June 13th and 14th at the Royal Horticultural Halls.

Judith Isherwood (chief executive of the Wales Millennium Centre), production manager Stewart Crosbie and stage designer/3D animator William Dudley are among those set to contribute their thoughts to 'Performing Theatres?'.

"This epitomises what the ABTT Theatre Show is all about - encouraging dialogue between end users and manufacturers," said show director Roger Fox. "It illustrates how through collaboration, technology can be best used to make theatres 'smart' and 'intelligent' in line with the demands of contemporary productions'."

The Theatre Trust's director, Mhora Samuel, is hopeful that the conference will encourage fresh discussion on the role of technology in theatre design. The aim of the event, she added, is "to identify some key principles that users would like to see taken on board in theatre design. Ensuring design responds to users' needs will mean theatres are more able to keep up with contemporary demands and help to safeguard their long-term future."
