US: The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences has issued the final nominee list for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, to be held on February 10th. While Bruce Springsteen and the White Stripes are among the names dominating the high-profile categories, there are also nods for Mark Ronson, Elliot Scheiner (pictured), and George and Giles Martin in, respectively, the production, engineering and surround sound album categories, writes David Davies
The Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical category features what must be one of the more musically eclectic line-ups of recent years, with Tchad Blake and cohorts Cameron Craig, Emery Dobyns and Jimmy Hogarth (all nominated for their work on Suzanne Vega’s Beauty & Crime) competing with Dave O’Donnell and Elliot Scheiner (Deborah Cox’s Destination Moon); Robert Carranza, Serban Ghenea, John Hanes and KC Porter (Ozomatli’s Don’t Mess With the Dragon); Tucker Martine (Floratone’s eponymously-titled album); and Jason Lehning (Viktor ‘brother of Alison’ Krauss’ II).
Attention in the Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category, meanwhile, is likely to focus on the presence of Mark Ronson, acknowledged for his work with Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and on his own unconventional covers set Version. There is, however, no shortage of strong competition from fellow nominees Timbaland (credited for his own work and with, amongst others, Fabolous featuring Ne-Yo), Mike Elizondo (Rilo Kiley, Maroon 5), Howard Benson (Sound the Alarm, Relient K) and Joe Chiccarelli (Oxbow, The Shins).
Also likely to be of interest to PSN-e readers is the Best Surround Sound Album field, where the contenders include The Beatles’ ‘remix’ spectacular Love (surround mix engineered by Paul Hicks, mastered by Tim Young, and produced by George and Giles Martin), The Flaming Lips’ At War With the Mystics 5.1 (engineered, mastered and produced by the band and Dave Fridmann) and – rather cheeringly – Porcupine Tree’s Fear Of A Blank Planet (surround mix engineered by Steven Wilson, mastered by Darcy Proper and produced by the band).
The results will be revealed at the historic 50th Grammy Awards ceremony, to be held at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on February 10th.
