MEXICO: AM Tecnolog_a (AMTEC) is DPA Microphones' first-ever distributor for Mexico, writes David Davies. Based in Mexico City, AMTEC was founded in 1991 by current company president Andr_s Mart_nez to represent TV, film and audio equipment manufacturers in Mexico. Encouragingly, AMTEC has already sold a consignment of 48 DPA 4063 miniature omnidirectional mics to Azteca Digital (TV Azteca), which has since placed an order for a further 50.

AMTEC is now in the process of locating potential local dealers to represent DPA throughout the country.

"Our appointment as the DPA representative means a lot for AMTEC, because we had been actively searching for a high-quality, reliable microphone range that we can sell into our different market sectors," said Mart_nez, pictured here to the left of DPA founder Morten Stove. "With DPA we've found all of this, plus their desire to support us in introducing their products to Mexico."

In other recent news for DPA, the manufacturer's 4017 shotgun mic was recently specified for a technically demanding radio broadcast of Olivier Messiaen's opera, Saint Fran_ois d'Assise, staged at the Muziek Theater in Amsterdam. Rob Heerschop from Broadcast Facilities Nederland (BFN) mounted the mic in two different positions to record the vocals of soloist Camilla Tilling.

Heerschop also used DPA mics to record the orchestra and general ambience; specifically 4003 omnis, 4015 wide cardioids, 4011 cardioids, 4060 miniature omnis and 4041-T2 large diaphragms - about which he is particularly effusive. "My favourite DPA mic for most of my orchestral recordings is the 4041-T2 because of its incredible warm sound," he said. "If possible I used them as an AB stereo pair, but of course in opera you have to improvise a little so as not to obstruct the audience's view of what's happening on stage."
