Blitz installs Sennheiser radio mic system for The Phantom of the Opera

The radio mic system was installed at the production’s home of Her Majesty’s Theatre, London

AV and event production company Blitz, a GES company, has completed its installation of a brand-new radio mic system for the West End musical production of The Phantom of the Opera.

The Sennheiser radio mic system was installed at the production’s home of Her Majesty’s Theatre, London.

Blitz has supported producers Cameron Mackintosh Ltd in delivering The Phantom of the Opera since the show opened in 1986 and holds the crown for the longest-serving sound provider to the same musical production in the same location in the West End.

The Phantom of the Opera has also used Sennheiser radio mics since the show began, with this installation being the fourth generation of Sennheiser wireless to be instated. The new equipment included EM 6000 Digital Receivers with SK 6212 Digital Mini-Bodypacks and a Wavetool Audio Monitoring Software system.

Blitz is the technical production partner at some of the UK’s landmark venues, including ExCeL, The NEC and Olympia London. In addition to their extensive work on ‘Phantom’, Blitz has also supplied sound, lighting, video and technical support to a number of theatrical productions across the UK.

Martyn Hunt, head of theatre at Blitz explained: “Blitz has worked with The Phantom of the Opera for 33 years and is always looking to make sure we are evolving when it comes to sound production. Such a renowned and successful musical deserves the very latest in sound technology, and we know that this latest investment with the Sennheiser installation will do just that.

“At Blitz we are passionate about our growing involvement with the theatre industry. We are thrilled to be able to bring our extensive expertise to this area and continue to serve the community after all these years.”

Mick Potter, sound designer for The Phantom of The Opera added: “It’s been a great opportunity to upgrade to the latest Sennheiser Digital 6000 RF system, given that Phantom of The Opera has run flawlessly on analogue Sennheiser RF systems for over 30 years. Sennheiser wireless RF systems have always been a very important part of my sound designs for many other Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh productions around the world. The new digital system with better all-round performance, sound quality and dynamic range has helped make a significant improvement to the quality of the sound at Her Majesty’s, and the fact we were able to achieve such a major changeover seamlessly, without losing any show performances is down to the excellent work of Blitz and the Phantom production team.”
