Newly restored Alexandra Palace Theatre installs Digico SD12

The Digico SD12 joins an L-Acoustics Kara set-up and Sennheiser microphones to form a substantial, powerful audio system in the theatre

After 80 years of slumber, Alexandra Palace Theatre has been restored and finally opened up to the public. As well as installing an L-Acoustics Kara system, the theatre also added a Digico SD12 mixing console and SD-Rack – supplied and installed by HD Pro Audio – to its powerful audio system. Sennheiser microphones are also being used in the theatre.

The theatre was originally opened in 1875 and hosted pantomime, opera, drama and ballet, but it struggled to compete with the West End and its use as a theatre ended. Subsequently, it was used as a cinema, a chapel, home of music hall stars and, more latterly, as a BBC prop store and workshop. In 2012, the decision was made to restore it to its former glory and with grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the London Borough of Haringey secured, work on the ambitious project to turn the Grade II listed space into a 900-seat working theatre began in 2016.

Head of production and technical for Alexandra Palace, Steve Brookes, commented: “Before my arrival, there wasn’t any kind of production infrastructure at Alexandra Palace – the Great Hall, which hosts many concerts, is a receiving house and doesn’t require any permanent facilities.”

He continued: “Audio isn’t my speciality, but I had heard a lot about the SD12. I conferred with my geekier friends, weighed up the pros and cons, price included, and the SD12 was the best fit. Also, it’s on most riders and the majority of engineers are familiar with it, so anyone on this sort of circuit will be able to work with it easily, which is really important.”

The SD12 sits at the front-of-house position, which is in a gallery high up in the rear of the auditorium, and is connected to the SD-Rack via Optocore. There are now plans to add an SD11 as a monitor desk during the second round of procurement which, Steve said, is being chosen for easy integration into the existing system. Its compact size will allow it to sit neatly next to the stage and its portability means it can double as a satellite desk in other areas around the site.

“The key for incoming productions is to make it as attractive and easy as possible for them,” Steve concluded. “That’s what we were aiming for and, with the help of HD Pro and the equipment they have installed, we have certainly achieved it.”
