UK: AKG has announced that more than 400 acts bands have already submitted entries to the 2008 instalment of its Unsigned Heroes competition. The best acts to have entered so far have been selected to play at the first live heat of the competition, taking place this Friday (February 29th) as part of new music event The Break at the Comedy Caf_ in Rivington Street, East London, reports David Davies.
Bands set to appear at the first live heat are Molloy (billed on the AKG press release as "saucy synth/guitar stompers"), Doll & The Kicks ("time-travelling new wavers") and Bill Davro ("Jacques Brel-influenced surf popsters").
Further live heats - all of which will feature performances by other, up-and-coming unsigned acts - will be be held on March 28th, April 25th and May 30th. The final winner and two runners-up will be announced on June 16th.
"We've probably received about double the amount of entries that we had this time last year," Amanda Chester, marketing manager at Harman Pro UK, tells PSN-e. "It's going brilliantly, and we've got some really good bands to appear at the first heat - we're very excited about that."
The eventual 2008 winner will play a live slot on the Strummerville stage at one of the UK's biggest summer music events, have a track remixed by UNKLE, and take pole position on a NoCarbon Records compilation to be released later this year. The two runners-up, meanwhile, will go on to play live at the JerseyLive and ZooThousand festivals later this year. All three winning bands will become AKG endorsees and receive a complete set of live microphones for use on stage, complete with wireless receivers and transmitters.
Submissions to Unsigned Heroes can be made via the official website (link below). Bands wishing to enter must be unsigned to any record label, must contain at least three members (all over 18) and must be able to reproduce their submitted tracks - all of which need to be original compositions - live on stage.
