UK: KT Tunstall is to decide the winner of the Shure Creative Award, writes David Davies. Devised to recognise and promote aspiring singer/songwriters, the Shure Creative Award is sponsored by Shure, the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance and Play Music Pickup magazine. Applicants are required to upload a video of themselves performing an original song, on any instrument, to the competition website.
Submissions will be judged by both the public and a panel of experts, with Tunstall set to pick the final winners herself. The first-prize winner will receive an opportunity to develop their talent and skills through a place on the Institute’s one-year Higher Diploma course in London, commencing this October and worth _4,950. Two runners-up will receive the opportunity to attend the same course at a discounted cost plus prizes from the competition’s sponsors.
Applicants can upload their videos to www.shurecreativeaward.com from May 30th; the closing date for entries is July 13th. For further details on entry guidelines, terms and conditions, click on the first link below.
“We are chuffed to have put together the Shure Creative Award and have the perfect partners in Play Music Pickup and The Institute,” Paul Crognale, marketing manager at Shure Distribution UK, tells PSN-e. “KT Tunstall agreeing to judge the final is a great addition and adds further credibility. In conjunction with our latest artist relations initiatives we are always striving to support new talent, and we believe there’s no better way to reward the talent of the future. Songwriting is an important craft, and one which we want to do our bit to keep alive.” Crognale adds that the Shure Creative Award will henceforth be an annual fixture.
“This new award came about because of the desire of three like-minded organisations – the Institute, Shure and Play Music Pickup – to develop a platform for the development of creative talent in the UK and internationally,” Paul Kirkham, director of the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (ICMP), tells PSN-e. “We’re really proud of what we have put together, and to have the active support and commitment of an artist of the calibre and standing of KT Tunstall, an icon of our times, is just fantastic – totally inspiring.
“The opportunity for the winner is not just to get a full year’s quality tuition, training and development at the Institute in London, but also to connect to the music industry, build a network, perform at live showcase events, and interact with other creative artists, A&R management and industry insiders. It’s an amazing opportunity!”
