Manchester-based events production company VME Ltd has become the latest UK outfit to acquire a Martin Audio MLA multi-cellular loudspeaker array.

The company, which offers a wide range of equipment and services to the entertainment, touring, corporate and broadcast industries, confirmed the purchase of a System 30 during this month’s Prolight + Sound. It followed news of the first UK MLA sale (a System 36) to hire outfit RG Jones, announced on the opening day of the show.

In committing the company to the large-format rig, VME directors, Dion and Andre Davie, declared their intent to add large-scale concert touring to a busy work roster. The MLA purchase, consisting of 18 MLA full range elements, two MLD downfills and ten MLX subs, will debut on "high profile shows which are still under wraps but which will put us on the map,” promises Dion Davie. “MLA is the direction we shall be taking as it represents the future of audio.”

He admits to having reviewed a number of alternative systems along the way in their quest for the perfect large format array. The clincher, Davie says, came at Battersea Power Station where VME trialled an MLA rig at the Freeze Festival. Since the event has a history of noise complaints, VME brought along Martyn ‘Ferrit’ Rowe, Martin Audio’s technical training manager, to mitigate the noise damage by notching out unwanted areas of coverage to prevent spill.

“It did exactly what was promised,” says Davie. “The results were remarkable, the sound was excellent and the number of complaints dropped right off. We can now use this system as a sales tool when doing local government work – as sound containment is a hot issue.

“With MLA we are well set for the future. But this is just the beginning and we will be looking at the MLA Compact next.”

VME Ltd has recently acquired a 26,000sqft facility (pictured) – “twice the size of our existing property” – in a prime location close to six acres of woodland in the south of Manchester (see separate story, here); one of its first commitments is to host three days of MLA induction training, provided by Martin Audio, in the new dedicated training room.

PL+S: MLA Mini takes Martin Audio to the masses

Following the widely-acclaimed success of the Multicellular Loudspeaker Array (launched in 2010) and its sister system the MLA Compact (2012), Martin Audio are introducing a third component to its groundbreaking sound reinforcement toolbox at this year’s Prolight + Sound event – MLA Mini.

Capital Sound to tackle Hyde Park with MLA

Capital Sound will deliver a huge Martin Audio MLA rig to the AEG-promoted series of concerts in London's famous park this summer, in an effort to stymie noise complaint issues which blighted some of last year's performances.

Capital Sound takes MLA to the '80s

Following a successful week of gigs in Hyde Park this summer, Capital Sound went on to deploy a Martin Audio MLA rig at the Rewind festival where offsite noise was once again a concern of local residents.
