Stefan Kudelski, inventor of the industry’s first professional portable recorder, died on 26 January at the age of 84 in Switzerland. His Nagra recorder transformed sound for film and remains one of the most recognised brands of portable recorders to this day. Stefan was also founder and honourary chairman of the Kudelski Group, who transferred Nagra Audio to Audio Technology Switzerland – still run by the Kudelski family – in January of last year.
During the course of his career, Stefan was awarded numerous distinctions including Academy Awards in 1965, 1977, 1978 and 1990, and two Emmy Awards in 1984 and 1986. He was also awarded an honourary doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in 1986. “Stefan Kudelski was one of those personalities who contributed to the international reputation of Switzerland. Anyone who knew him could only be impressed by his sharpness, his incredible culture, his curiosity and his permanent sense of humor,” said Claude Smadja, vice chairman at Kudelski SA. “Stefan Kudelski was more than a brilliant inventor; he was a man of values, a fine mind that will live on with us for a long time.” André Kudelski, Stefan’s son and chairman and CEO of the Kudelski Group added: “Stefan Kudelski defined our Group. The values he stood for form the foundation of our company and its reputation today across the five continents. Among those values, the determination to demonstrate that technological challenges described as impossible are always successfully achieved by teams that know no boundaries.”
