Beginning 26 July, Sonic Vista Studios in Ibiza will launch an educational programme designed to give music and audio professionals the skills they need to take their professional careers to a higher level. Sonic Vista Academy (SVA) is a week-long development programme co-founded by audio engineering and music industry educator Paul Nolan, and Sonic Vista Studios founder Henry Sarmiento. Nolan, whose previous work includes over three years as head instructor at SAE, said much of what is being taught at SVA is based on questions students ask – himself included – once they have finished their audio education and are entering the industry. Questions that aren’t necessarily addressed as part of the ‘traditional’ audio education model: “Whilst that model of education is obviously very popular and necessary to a certain extent, it seems now that there’s room for a new way of doing things, which is much more connected to the grassroots level, and it’s much more connected to what’s actually going on in the scene at this very moment,” he said. With that in mind, the SVA mentors include experts in the music, film and games industries such as former Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, film composer and former Tangerine Dream member Michael Hoenig, and composer/musician Jamie Porteous, who has also done work with RockStar Games. Speakers and representatives from well-known industry names like Beatport, Icon Collective, Avid, sE Electronics, Dynaudio Acoustics, Vestax, M Audio and AudioRaiders will join the SVA mentoring team, rounded out with a series masterclasses by high-profile industry veterans – the first of which will be presented by producer Charlie May, who has worked with Sasha, UNKLE, and William Orbit, among others. “It’s been a really inspirational experience to find a group of people who have very positive points of view about how education can be, and also about discovering new talent and pushing these people,” said Nolan. “We’re all very aware that if we find someone and they become successful then we’re all a part of that, and that’s an incredibly positive thing.“ www.sonicvistaacademy.comwww.sonicvistastudios.com
