Today we can reveal the full line-up for the Pre-Roll, the two sessions of talk and Q&A ahead of the Pro Sound Awards on 25 September.
Before a panel of respected live sound engineers swap stories of life on the road with artists including Prince and The Prodigy, three top producers will talk about life in the studio with The Smiths, Michael Palin and Elbow.
Adding to the names already reported (Andre Jacquemin and Ben Hillier), we can confirm that Stephen Street will be appearing in the earlier ‘Producer Sessions’ part of the event. Jon Burton (pictured), Dave Swallow, Matt Kanaris and Chicky Reeves will paint a picture of the world of mixing in the ‘Live Sound Sessions’ that follow.
Stephen Street began work on the first of his three albums for The Smiths 30 years ago this year. Street continued to work with The Smiths until they split in 1987, subsequently collaborating with Morrissey on his debut solo album Viva Hate, which he also produced. It was an instant No.1 album. In early 1991, Street was introduced to Blur, recording the band’s first top ten hit, There’s No Other Way. Another successful relationship began in 1994, as Street, producing the debut album by The Cranberries, Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We. His work with Blur and The Cranberries was recognised in 1994 when the London native won the Q Magazine award for Best Producer. In 2006 Street won Producer Of The Year at the Music Week Awards.
Stephen Street will be joining Monty Python cohort Andre Jacquemin and Depeche Mode producer Ben Hillier in a discussion about his recording work and experiences from 5.30pm.
The second part of the Pre-Roll, building up to the pre-awards drinks at 7.30pm, will feature a panel of top live sound engineers: Dave Swallow, Jon Burton, Matt Kanaris, and Chicky Reeves. This foursome brings a swathe of knowledge covering a vast number of performance artists.
Dave Swallow is a highly experienced FOH engineer with a list of past clients that includes Amy Winehouse, Seasick Steve, DJ Fresh and La Roux. He is currently working front of house for Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly and The Bloody Beetroots. Over the years he has also developed a reputation for his skills as an educator, speaker and writer – he has been involved in panel and Q&A sessions at events such as PLASA, runs the Live Sound module at Backstage Academy in Wakefield, Yorkshire and is the author of the book Live Audio: The Art of Mixing a Show.
Jon Burton has been a live sound engineer since the early 1980s, and has gone on to mix FOH and monitors for big-name bands such as Stereophonics, Pendulum and The Prodigy, who he has worked with for more than a decade. Burton is known for his extensive engineering knowledge across the live, studio and broadcast sectors – he has been a freelance lecturer for the past 15 years, and has taught students in colleges and universities all over the world. He is also co-owner of the Laundry Rooms, a five-studio recording complex in Sheffield, UK.
After eight years working with Skan PA, Matt Kanaris has found himself on monitoring duties for the likes of Lana Del Rey, Goldfrapp, La Roux and Laura Marling. He’s served as a crew chief, systems engineer and technician for the Download and Isle of Wight Festivals, and is flying over from New York especially to share his experiences with the Pro Sound Awards Pre-Roll audience.
Charles “Chicky” Reeves is a producer, recording and mastering engineerbut more recently has found himself called upon for live sound mixing duties, particularly for Grace Jones, OMD and, earlier in 2014, Prince’s UK tour. His studio, Sublime Studios, is located in north London, England, where he focuses on committing electronica to tape. His compositions in the realm of ‘library music’ (published by Extreme Music) can be heard on several popular TV shows around the world, and he is currently working on a new songwriting project with his wife, under the moniker of ‘Chicky and Coco’ (chickyandcoco.com).
The second Pro Sound Awards, to be held at the world-famous Ministry of Sound nightclub on 25 September, encompasses the wide spectrum of pro audio, recognising excellence in the four sectors of installed, studio, broadcast and live/touring sound, along with four special awards for Rising Star, Marketing Initiative of the Year, Grand Prix and Lifetime Achievement.
