The celebrated North London venue will host the 2011 Music Week Awards, which is set to take place on 24 May, writes David Davies.

Originally employed as a turntable engine shed, the Roundhouse was converted for live events in the mid 1960s. Celebrated performances by Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Soft Machine saw the venue become closely associated with British psychedelia, whilst theatrical performances included Kenneth Tynan’s theatrical revue, Oh Calcutta!, and a series of groundbreaking productions directed by Peter Brook.

The Roundhouse fell out of use in the early 1980s, but was renovated extensively from the late ‘90s onwards, prior to an official reopening in 2006. Since then, the venue has again become an integral part of London’s cultural scene, hosting the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Histories Cycle, the iTunes Music Festival, the BBC Electric Proms and Frank Zappa – 70th Birthday Celebration, among many other events. Grade II-listed, the Roundhouse received National Heritage Site status in 2010.

Now it set to add the Music Week Awards to its roll-call, with Music Week editor Paul Williams remarking that “since its revival, The Roundhouse has re-established itself as one of the UK’s most impressive music venues, and having our Awards there will add a new dimension to the annual event.”

The submission process for the judged categories is now underway, and details on making an entry can be found at the dedicated Awards website here (www.musicweekawards.com). The closing date for entries in these categories is 25 February.

For the first time this year the event will also recognise environmental initiatives taking place in the music industry, with the introduction of the Julie’s Bicycle Green Business Award.

As in 2010, three categories will again be decided by musicweek.com readers, who will be tasked with selecting the shortlists and winners for Best Mobile Music App, Best Music Festival and Best Studio. Long lists for all three categories will be unveiled in the next few weeks, when voting will also go live on the site.
