UK: The second edition of the Music Producers Guild (UK) Awards will take place on February 11, writes David Davies. Following a highly successful first instalment (read PSN-e’s coverage), the 2010 event will again take place at the Cafe de Paris in London.
Widely perceived as a welcome reassertion of the producer’s centrality to the recording industry, the first Music Producers Guild (UK) Awards brought recognition for studio luminaries including Paul Epworth and Brian Eno (both pictured here), Bernard Butler, Danger Mouse, James Towler and Cenzo Townshend.
Continuing the association with the BRIT Awards established ahead of the inaugural event, the winner of the Music Producers Guild Producer of the Year will automatically receive a BRIT Award for Best Producer (Butler having been the first such recipient). Other categories will see awards for engineers, mixers, remixers, programmers, mastering engineers and ‘unsung heroes’.
According to the MPG, an honour from the Music Producers Guild is not just recognition of achievement, it can also help to boost business. The organisation cites the example of 2009 Best Recording Facility Award winner British Grove Studios, whose studio manager, David Stewart, noted: “Since winning our Music Producers Guild Award I’m delighted to say that we’ve seen a steady increase in enquiries. Undoubtedly, the great publicity we received has been very good for business and that is always welcome, especially in these uncertain economic times.”
Sadie Groom, managing director of event organiser Bubble & Squeak, tells PSN-e: “The 2010 MPG Awards will build on the great success it achieved last year. We have made some changes to the categories this year and will have Breakthrough Producer, replacing Newcomer, and are adding Breakthrough Engineer to the list, which we know will be popular. As well as adding in more seats downstairs, we will be expanding the seating area on the balcony and will have a Black Box vocal booth for guests to try out.”
