Learn to Play Day steps up, founder steps down

Founder and executive chairman John Hornby Skewes has announced his retirement after 56 years of activity in the industry.

This year’s Learn to Play Day, the flagship event of the UK’s Music for All Charity, takes place on 12-13 March.

The UK-wide event offers the general public the chance to have a free ‘taster’ lesson on a musical instrument.

There is a bittersweet note to this year’s events as founder and executive chairman John Hornby Skewes has announced his retirement after 56 years of activity in the industry.

In a statement Skewes said: “I take this opportunity to thank all the many employees, customers, suppliers, support service providers and members of the press who have worked with me over all these years. Without this support John Hornby Skewes & Co Ltd would not have succeeded. My wife and I are very grateful.”

The company (JHS) will continue as a family owned and family run business with John’s son-in-law and daughter – Dennis and Linda Drumm – heading up the board of directors.
