With the support of the RTP museum in Lisbon, German system integrator BTS broadcast technology solutions will present a fully functional vintage OB van, built in 1957, at the IBC exhibition in September.
The showpiece vehicle will be parked at Outside Area Stand OE115 and will serve to demonstrate the historic roots of BTS, as well as of the industry in general.
The van was originally ordered by Portuguese public broadcaster RTP in the mid 1950s and built in Darmstadt, Germany. The Mercedes Benz Model LP-312/36, carrying the Portuguese license plate number GD-61-21 has a six cylinder diesel engine and a maximum speed of 76km/h. It was the first vehicle of its kind in Portugal, and is thought to be the only remaining example still in existence today.
On 9 February 1958 the first exterior broadcast was made from the vehicle, coverage of a football match between Sporting Lisbon and FC Austria at the José Alvalade Stadium.
The van was in service between until 1980. As a result of an agreement between RTP and Mercedes Benz Portugal, the vehicle was completely renovated and restored in 2006. RTP’s Engineering and Technology Directorship later supplied the relevant TV equipment, being faithful, far as possible, to the era in which it operated.
“The restoration of this vehicle is an example of RTP’s preservation and maintenance of an important piece of our historical, technical and cultural heritage,” says BTS’ Peter Weber.
