Mastering engineer and Digital Domain Mastering founder Bob Katz is to host a full-day seminar, ‘Bob Till You Drop’, in Rome on 8 June.

A renowned jazz/classical mastering engineer whose credits include Grammy Award-winning albums by Paquito D’Rivera and Olga Tañon, Katz is also the author of an acclaimed book, Mastering Audio: The Art and the Science.

During ‘Bob Till You Drop’ – which will take place at Auditorium Della Discoteca Di Stato one day before TC Electronic’s Katz- and George Massenburg-featuring mastering seminar at the same venue – Katz will invite participatns to bring in their own mixes to help explore issues including mix preservation and improvement. He will also discuss album assembly, PQ coding, dynamics processing and restoration techniques, as well as revealing some of his own mastering ‘magic tricks’.

“It’s going to be a fun, inspiring and deeply educational day,” said Katz. “I’ll have a high-resolution, mastering-quality playback system on hand and the room itself will be acoustically treated. We’re going to do a lot of listening. We’ll listen to minimalist-mic’d recordings that will highlight the ways in which a recording’s origins impact the mix and the master. We’ll A/B a lot of final mixes with their masters, carefully considering the philosophies and tools that can improve even a good mix. Importantly, we’ll also listen to some masters that are worse than the raw mixes, highlighting what went wrong and how to avoid it.”

The cost of Katz’s one-day seminar (in English) is US$185 (with twenty-five US$140 student tickets available). Lunch and drinks wll be provided. Spaces are limited and to book a seat, please register before 21 May via
