Jon Burton and Dave Swallow are to participate in a series of exclusive masterclasses about live sound production at Alchemea in London.
On 28 June, Jon Burton (pictured left; The Prodigy, Pendulum, Mika, Stereophonics, Radiohead) will discuss his approach to soundchecks and live show mixing. The following day, Dave Swallow (Amy Winehouse, Seasick Steve, Corinne Bailey Rae, La Roux) will explore the ‘art of mixing a show’. Following a talk about the creative aspects of mixing in the morning, Swallow will discuss technical and system-based issues during the afternoon.
“The objective is to create a series of classes that happen two or three times a year, featuring top live sound engineers who are willing to share their knowledge,” Darryn de la Soul, live sound diplma course co-ordinator at Alchemea College, tells PSNE. “We all know that, whilst formal education is extremely valuable, nothing beats 20 years of actually ‘doing it’. The classes are aimed not only at Alchemea students and graduates, but also engineers who have been around the block a few times and are looking for a bit of inspiration. Anyone and everyone is welcome. For these two masterclasses we have a morning and an afternoon session, with plenty of time for Q&A.”
The Burton/Swallow sessions are not the end of the series; more events will follow, with the next due to take place in August/September.
“I have some very big names interested, but cannot reveal them or dates just yet,” says de la Soul.
Events will be held in the East Wing of Alchemea College, The Windsor Centre, Windsor Street, London N1 8QG (map ref here). The nearest tube stations are Angel and Highbury & Islington.
These are ticketed events with limited seating available, so anyone wishing to attend is advised to book place early. To purchase a ticket (which costs £20) and for full session details, please visit the Alchemea website at www.alchemea.com.
