The Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) has announced that next year’s ABTT Theatre Show will take place at the Alexandra Palace on 24–25 June 2015. 2014’s event, on 11–12 June, was staged at the the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane.
According to an ABTT statement, “[c]hanges in the calendar of European trade exhibitions have dictated that the established ABTT Theatre Show dates were not available for 2015, and so the ideal opportunity to review the future time and location of the event has arisen.” The organisation also points to increased exhibitor demand for the need for the new venue, and says the Alexandra Palace (pictured – photo: Robin Sones), in Alexandra Park, north London – an imposing Italianate entertainment venue nicknamed “the People’s Palace” – will become the show’s permanent home.
“Surprisingly, it fits the bill on a number of levels,” says Roger Fox, show director. “Within the venue is the most extraordinary Victorian theatre, which opened in 1875. We arrive at the Alexandra Palace at the point when funding has been sourced for a major redevelopment programme for this theatre [so] to be at Alexandra Palace feels like a natural home for a theatre show.
“The facilities are excellent and we now have good quality space to grow the show.”
The ABTT Theatre Show began life as the ABTT Trade Show at the Donmar Warehouse theatre in central London in 1978. Since then, it has been held in a variety of venues, including the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm and Riverside Studios in Hammersmith.
