London-based location recording specialist 3G Sounds has developed the Sample Delay Calculator iOS app for in-the-field time aligning of speakers and microphones. Developed by University of Surrey Tonmeister student Chris Kalcov and Grace Zarczynska from the University of York, the Sample Delay Calculator was designed "primarily as a quick tool for ourselves and other engineers to align spot microphones to the main array when using a digital system in a large recording space, as there was no such app yet available which could do it as accurately and elegantly," said Kalcov. The app works based on a Speed = Distance/Time equation, with additional options to compensate for other imperfections including air temperature. The required delay is calculated in milliseconds and samples, which can then be input into a digital mixer, DAW or speaker management controller. The Sample Delay Calculator can help engineers overcome blurred transients, comb filtering and echoes created by poorly-timed wavefronts and improve clarity on multi-microphone recordings. In the future, Kalcov hopes "to create an algorithm which can provide the engineer with accurate time-aligning and panning information for a spot mic when used with a conjunction of 'main mic' arrays such as the Decca Tree, spaced pairs or near-coincident, but for the time being and after lots of demand we are trying to make the app available for Android."
