County Cork-based OB facilities company Television Mobile (TVM) Ltd has purchased three SoundField UPM-1 stereo-to-5.1 upmix processors for use in two of its five-strong OB truck fleet.

TVM already has a SoundField DSF-2 digital microphone system in one OB vehicle, and one of the UPMs will be deployed in this facility to upmix VTR output and sound effects in stereo to 5.1. The other two UPM-1s will be sited in another TVM OB vehicle, where they will be used to upmix VTR sound/effects and the output of the stereo mic pair which captures crowd ambience.

Looking ahead, TVM head of sound Pat Keogh remarked that the aim is “to get everything into 5.1 now. We have a new truck being built at the moment which will come into service in February, and that will have a SoundField DSF-2 mic system and a UPM-1 from the outset”.

Small OB proves a Hit at IBC for Riverside TV

New media technology and connectivity in small packages mean that not all live TV needs a big OB truck and uplink support. Irish facilities company Riverside Television is proving the point with a new mobile vehicle half way between a scanner and a SNG van, which features a well equipped audio area that has had workouts on a talent show and a major festival.

HD OBs - trucking on a road near you

They're everywhere - at cricket grounds, football stadia, conference venues, theatres, local arts centres or just generally slogging up and down motorways - and, as Kevin Hilton reports, there looks like no stopping the growing number of high definition outside broadcast trucks. This perception is confirmed by figures in the latest edition of the HD OB Van Directory, which details 42 new vehicles across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.

Sound eyes the gold medal

Clever graphics and multiple camera angles get the plaudits these days in broadcast sport coverage but, as Kevin Hilton reports, audio is beginning to forge ahead.
