The Financial Times has opened a new television studio at its London headquarters, with audio on an equal footing with video, writes Kevin Hilton.

The facility has the River Thames and City of London as a backdrop and will provide material for the business newspaper’s podcasts and internet broadcasts, as well as live and pre-recorded interviews for other TV and radio broadcasters.

The installation was project managed by systems integrator VSC, which last year worked on the FT’s radio studio. The brief this time was for a multi-functional TV facility. Material is carried over a bi-directional video circuit, with audio distributed by Evertz 7700 and 500 series audio embedders and de-embedders.

Audio control in the gallery area (pictured), which is designed to be run by a single operator, includes a Soundcraft LX711-24 console, Genelec 8030 monitors, SDI embedded audio bargraph meters on an Evertz VIP series multiviewer, a TSL AMU2-2MHD audio level unit and a Trilogy Orator intercom.

Presenters in the studio use Sony UWP series radio mic packs with Tram TR-50X lavalier microphones. Monitoring is on either Sennheiser EW-300 in-ear units or Fostex 6301B floor monitors.

The studio is close to main offices so care had to be taken to create enough separation between the two areas. “To ensure the acoustic solution was absolutely first class, even in an office environment, the use of custom acoustic panels fitted within the building’s infrastructure along with the best available audio equipment, which produced the high standard we always strive for in any installation,” explained VSC project manager John Hartz.
