Belgian OB company Outside Broadcast will show its new 3G HD/5.1 truck at next week's IBC in Amsterdam. Unit 15 features a Lawo mc² 66 Mk II console and made its debut at the Tour de France during June and July. Outside Broadcast's technical manager, Andre Verbesselt, explains that Unit 15 was built initially to replace an older vehicle and so "renew the fleet". The 14 x 4.7 x 4 meter, expanding sides articulated truck can accommodate up to 20 Sony or Grass Valley HD cameras. The audio area looks on to the vision control section and houses a 56-fader mc²66 Mk II with 192 DSP channels, 48 local mic/line inputs, 32 local line outputs and two fibre stage boxes, each with 48 mic/line inputs. Routing is through an 8k Lawo Nova HD Core, which has both Ravenna and MADI capability. Lawo consoles also feature in Outside Broadcast's three other big trucks. Monitoring for 5.1 is on an Adam S3X-H system, while communications are provided through a Riedel Artist intercom. Unit 15 spent three weeks on the Tour de France, providing facilities for American network NBC. The truck is currently in Frankfurt at a Daimler-Mercedes press conference, after which it will travel to Amsterdam. outsidebroadcast.be

HD OBs - trucking on a road near you

They're everywhere - at cricket grounds, football stadia, conference venues, theatres, local arts centres or just generally slogging up and down motorways - and, as Kevin Hilton reports, there looks like no stopping the growing number of high definition outside broadcast trucks. This perception is confirmed by figures in the latest edition of the HD OB Van Directory, which details 42 new vehicles across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
