Broadcast equipment manufacturer and distributor Canford has appointed a new chief executive to head the company after the retirement of Charles Kennedy, writes Kevin Hilton. Lief Friestad joins Canford from building and aerospace group United Technologies Corporation. Kennedy (pictured), usually known as "Chas", joined Canford in the mid-1980s and was technical director before holding the post of chief executive for the past 11 years. Prior to that he worked in radio as chief engineer at both BBC local stations Radio York and Radio Tees. Kennedy, a graduate of Glasgow University, was also part of the engineering team that set up London commercial station Capital Radio in the early 1970s. Originally from southern Norway, Friestad worked on brands including Chubb, Prat and Whitney, Sikorsky and Otis while with United Technologies. His previous companies include Johnson Controls and Lapp Group, which specialises in industrial cabling. The chairman of Canford, Hugh Morgan Williams, comments on the appointment, "Leif brings great expertise from a cross-section of electronic industries and a wealth of international experience at a time when the company is focused on developing its brands and growing in both domestic and international export markets." Friestad adds, "Canford has an enviable reputation with respected brands and outstanding prospects in its traditional core markets of high quality broadcast and audio equipment coupled with a very well established service and distribution capability. I can already see exciting growth opportunities in both existing and associated markets for the business and the brands." www.canford.co.uk
